WHAT IS BLACK FACE?
Black face is a form of racism.
It originated as away to dehumanize black people. It took place in societies that systematically repressed people of color.
It was a form of makeup that allowed whites to distance themselves from the humiliations they caused blacks when they mocked them in theater plays.
White people can often be found dressing up as black people for Halloween, which is highly insulting.
With Robert Downey Jr dressing up in blackface for Tropic Thunder and Megyn Kelly taking heat for defending dressing in blackface for Halloween, a lot of people are wondering what is the big deal about blackface and what is it anyway?
As usual, many non-people of color acting confused about why blackface is so offensive to the black community, so here is a brief explainer video to enlighten non-colored people on the subject matter of blackface.
For the record, blackface is not a respected art form. You cannot use being an actor, or a performer as a reason to dress up in blackface to mock black men and women. Blackface has always been used as a way to mock black people, historically and in present-day and it is deemed a racist act.
