Expanding STEM Education

Abbott has long been committed to advancing women and those from diverse backgrounds in STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - and providing them opportunities when they enter the professional workforce.

We created our high school STEM internship for girls and underrepresented students in response to U.S. Census data that show* women hold just 27% of U.S. STEM jobs. We believe in exposing students to STEM and giving them meaningful, real work experience.

Of the 150+ students who have gone through our high school STEM internship, about 95% go on to study STEM in college. As our first former interns are completing college, we’ve started hiring some as full-time engineers; about 75% are women.

To build on this success, we published our “Shaping the Future of STEM” blueprint** and made it available to other companies so they can create a similar program. We believe we can’t change the face of STEM alone; and companies need to work together to develop and support the best and brightest minds in order to create the life-changing technologies of the future.
