WORDS ARE THE SOURCE OF OUR LIMITATIONS AND FREEDOMS- Excerpt from Transforming the Victim by LAB
Words are the construct of civilization.
Words are the very thing that build and ruin societies.
Because of words we have religion, law, war, love, systems and order, books, films friendships, language, but most importantly we have ideas because of words. We have ideas like freedom, love, airplanes and trains.
Because of language we have great capabilities to communicate information and exchange ideas. Because he have learned to communicate so fluidly and expertly because of the systems of language we have adapted, technology has been able to enhance and develop at a faster rate.
The printing press invented by Johannes Gutenberg, spread words faster than ever in history.
This fed the growing Renaissance and it greatly facilitated scientific publishing. Making it a major catalyst for the Scientific Revolution.
Words are the source of our limitations and freedoms. Every time there is a new law that denies someone their rights, it is but a few sentences strung together.
Alan W. Watts said, “We seldom realize, for example that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own.
For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which were given to us by our society.” It’s not a bad thing that we think in terms of culture, for we are a part of it, but to understand our own minds and transcend them, we need to understand the culture we are based in first and foremost.
We then need to proceed to learning as much as possible about other cultures because this will help us understand ourselves outside of a small fabricated framework.
If we can become an observer instead of a participant for a time, we can understand what is going on around us. It is by noticing our limitations that we can begin to exceed them.
