In life we strive.We strive to obtain. We strive to lose our old ways to gain better ways, but what happens when we just lose things without replacing them?  

If you are thinking about how you are not getting what you want, remember there are many people who will never have what you have right now.

What happens when we cannot appreciate our own lives, because we decided they were worthless if we were not rich and famous?

What happens when we leave our marriage of twenty years for a fling that burns out fast? 

What happens when we leave the stability of our job, to audition for some obscure role?

We do not always need to be looking to the future. 

We do not always need to better ourselves. 

We do not always need the advice of self-help books.



By always looking forward to the future, we are telling ourselves life is not worth anything right now. We are supposed to value and live in the present moment. Always valuing the next job, the next date, the next city over the current one shows extreme discontentment with your life and present situation. However, if you reflect inwards, you might realize the dissatisfaction is internal and not external which means changing the outside world, will not change the turmoil within. 

With that being said, self improvement is crucial to ones overall satisfaction with life. However, self improvement is tricky, because we can fall into the trap of feeling we are not good enough for things now. We can tell ourselves we need to get into better shape before we go to the gym or ask our crush out. If we feel we are not good enough in the moment this will cause us to pass up many opportunities to improve our lives because we keep telling ourselves we have to wait and get better. 

If you wait to long to act life will pass you by in a hurry. It's not wise to wait to act. When you see a pretty girl, you should ask her out. When you see a job opportunity, you should apply, not wait till next year. If next year, passes you by this year, it will pass you by next, and the next thing you know you were 40 and always going to do things tomorrow or next year, so you never did anything. You have to act now.

This sounds like common sense, but many of us walk around ashamed of ourselves for not achieving the almost impossible dreams of celebrities and millionaires. 

Does you life suck because you are not rich and famous?

We cannot be ashamed of our lives just because they were not grandiose. We cannot be ashamed of our lives or ourselves just because we feel that we are somehow common, or just a teacher, or a mechanic. We need to live in the moment. We need to be present and content with the life that we are living, and we need to change our attitudes. Nothing will change without inner change. You can change your city and your job, but inner peace comes from within and what you are really searching for is not riches and fame, it's contentment.

We do not always need to make more money or get a better job or house. Sometimes ordinary is perfect, ordinary is extraordinary. You cannot tear yourself down all day, all week, all year, because you have not made a million dollars. This is a strange mentality to have, to never value yourself worth or the life you live because it's not some grandiose idea of success.

This reminds me of something I read in a business book once: many people fantasize about running an international company while they forget that before they do that, they need to be able to run a small or medium sized company first! Likewise, many people want to have a lot of resources at their disposal, while they can't even handle the resources they have. Sounds paradoxical if you think about it...
