    This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) as Directorate Support and Investment Officer for DBT China and Hong Kong. Our aim is to promote UK trade and investment across the world, which is vital for the prosperity of the UK. DBT brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed.     DBT operates in 108 countries. Establishing new relationships around the globe, DBT promotes UK trade to ensure the UK takes advantage of the huge opportunities open to us, securing and improving economic well-being, stability, and helping to create tens of thousands of jobs. DBT has one of the largest representations of the 18 government departments working in China, which are coordinated and led by His Majesty's Ambassador who is responsible for the UK's relationship with China.

    His Majesty's Trade Commissioner (HMTC) is responsible for Trade and Investment work in China, one of nine global regions and the largest DBT overseas network in the world. With c.190 staff across six posts - Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Wuhan – DBT, as part of the UK government network in China offers a fast-paced place to work at the heart of UK-China Government relations.

    Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

    1. Investment Team Support (50%)

    As part of the investment team you will support and help identify Chinese companies who wish to invest into the UK. As part of the role you will:

  • Support pipeline creation and expansion by identifying possible investors by using data, working with multipliers and coordinating opportunities and activities across the team to ensure investment is at the forefront of officer's minds when meeting with companies.
  • Plan investment focused events by working with the wider team such as round tables, dinners and secure speaking slots at events. Additionally, to work with the wider team to have investment elements to trade focused events.
  • Support business planning on an annual basis and support the creation of ambitious objectives to ensure it is relevant to the year ahead.
  • Stakeholder engagement/management through meetings and attending events, engaging key investors, keeping in touch with them and invites to key activities such as with UK Ministers and senior civil servants.
  • Undertake regional travel to key events with UK based staff as a guest, to join talks, attend networking opportunities and support other team member's visits through logistics planning and light translation.
  • Use data from both internal and external sources to support effective and objective decision-making.
  • Work with the UK HQ investment team and UK regional leads on coordinating their support on landing investment opportunities
  • Working on development of investment focused digital material including case studies, media articles and investment propositions
  • 2. Flexible Support (30%)

  • Provide administrative support to the wider team by being the docking point for requests from the Corporate Operations team on finance, budgets and performance management.
  • Undertake flexible working outside of investment teams operations to build capability and support with other sector teams in Pharma, Healthcare and MedTech.
  • This can include but not limited to sector research, events organising and working on marketing and commercial projects for the team.
  • Support the team in delivering practical and logistical arrangements for visits and events.
  • Make flight/train bookings/hotel reservations for the team and visitors when needed.
  • Prepare visit programmes for official visitors & DBT China Senior Leadership Team and provide practical sector specific trade & investment support.
  • 3. Knowledge & Skills Development (10%)

  • Undertake continuous learning and development, including on-the-job opportunities to deepen knowledge and understanding of the sector, the UK capability landscape, and the regional business environment. Learn from others across government and the wider teams, as well as formal training courses.
  • 4. Corporate Contribution (10%)

  • Provide support where necessary in delivery of the wider objectives of the Corporate Operations and DBT China team, including on cross-cutting issues.
  • Promote and contribute to the China Country Business Plan and network values, actively and constructively participating in Post activities.

  • For Guangzhou: A gross monthly salary of CNY 12,844 for Chinese Nationals and an abated salary of CNY 17,990 for British Nationals and spouses/partners of diplomats who are 'W' (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria;
  • For Chongqing: A gross monthly salary of CNY 11,909 for Chinese Nationals and an abated salary of CNY 16,219 for British Nationals and spouses/partners of diplomats who are 'W' (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria;

  • 22 days annual leave entitlement in pro-rata which increases by 0.5 per full calendar year worked up to maximum of 25 days. We offer different types of compulsory leave in accordance to Chinese law, e.g. Maternity Leave, Paternity Leave, Marriage Leave, Parental leave, etc.
  • In addition to the above compulsory leave, we also offer other types of leaves with pay e.g. Study Leave, Volunteering Leave to support staff who undertakes volunteering activities, Special Paid Leave to deal with emergencies involving a close family member, and more.

  • Working Patterns:

    35 hours of work per week from Monday to Friday, 08:00-17:00. There will be occasions that require you work outside normal hours.
