The role

Are you passionate about commodity market research? We are seeking a talented and motivated analyst to be based in our Beijing office to support regional experts to strengthen our Gas and LNG Market research presence in China. There are two different tracks on analyst role, depending on candidates' background, skills and interest.

Track 1: Data analyst

The role will support China gas team with multi-market data requirements, including translating client needs into technical requirements, developing automated data-capturing tools to help with routine data-scouting work, supporting manual data-scouting efforts where necessary, maintaining and improving the existing code base of modeling and simulation tools.

Responsibilities:

• Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources related to Chinese gas and LNG market, and maintain databases/data systems
• Process and clean data by reviewing reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct problems
• Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets
• Support dashboard design and data visualization
• Build data models based on business and product development needs
• Work with team to prioritize business/information needs and identify improvement opportunities

Track 2: Research analyst

The role will contribute with analysis of the Chinese gas market covering data collection and forecasts for the gas and LNG value chain, including trade flows, infrastructure developments on pipelines, regasification terminals and storages, and price formation using our bottom-up approach to data, as well as research on China gas policies and providing insights. The candidate is expected to understand the short-term to long-term market dynamics and be able to combine the analysis of data with input from industry players to build insightful views and predictions.

Responsibilities:

• Support regional experts and collaborate with other region's analysts to strengthen our global research and presence, with a main focus on China market but also take some responsibility on global market coverage
• Analyze China gas market fundamentals using our internal data and external sources, and provide forecast
• Track developments in Chinese gas value chain, such as infrastructure and policy
• Produce quantitative/qualitative research reports and commentaries delivering strategic market outlook, and present findings to the team or clients
• Work with team to prioritize business and information needs and identify improvement opportunities

Requirements

Track 1: Data analyst

• Strong academic track record in a data driven field such as mathematics, physics, engineering, economics, computer science, statistics, or quantitative finance
• Good command of spoken and written English (strongly preferred) and Chinese and able to demonstrate good writing skills
• Technical expertise regarding database design development, data mining, and segmentation techniques
• Experience with and a strong interest in developing numerical models/algorithms to describe processes within science, economics, markets or similar
• Strong knowledge of and experience with databases (SQL, etc.), and programming knowledge (Python, etc.)
• Hands on Visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, etc.)
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
• Adept at queries, report writing, and presenting findings

Track 2: Research analyst

• Strong academic track record in the relevant education field (e.g. economics, engineering, international trade, finance, information technology)
• Preferably with 1-3 years of direct industry experience in energy and gas market research or competitor intelligence groups at oil an gas companies
• Keen in energy and commodity research
• Good command of spoken and written English (strongly preferred) and Chinese and able to demonstrate good writing skills
• Outstanding ability to synthesize data and information coming from multiple sources (quantitative and qualitative)
• Solid proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a hands-on attitude
• Occasional travels for client visits and industry events
