Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team explores new vehicle and societal innovations that require some level of invention before they can be applied to our products and services. The team is building on a history of Ford innovation, including our invention of the three-way catalytic converter to modernize vehicle emissions controls in the 1970s and the world’s first rear inflatable seat belts in 2010.

Today, we are exploring and delivering ways to make smarter vehicles and our transportation system more efficient to improve people’s lives by helping them move more freely, safely and enjoyably. For example, we are changing how our products are made by creating high-quality vehicles in an environmentally and socially responsible way, including the use sustainable materials. Since 2000, we have used 12 industry and world-first plant-based materials in our production vehicles. We also are researching the possible use of tomato skin, bamboo, agave fiber, dandelion roots, algae and coffee chaff as part of our ambitious goal of making our vehicles with up of 20 percent sustainable material by 2025.

What you will be able to do
Are you highly motivated with a passion for engineering automated systems? Are you ready to partner with a multidisciplinary team to transform project research into practical product level embedded solutions? We are seeking a results-driven professional with an impressive combination of skills in systems modeling and simulation (SMS) as well as product development and systems engineering (MBSE) to enhance our failure, risk and release assessment capabilities as part of the ADAS, Robotics and Model Based Engineering (MBE) section of our Research and Advanced Engineering - Controls and Automated Systems organization. You will:

  • Help design automated systems to enable virtual evaluation of concept, performance, and safety throughout the development process
  • Develop operational scenarios and sophisticated virtual environments
  • Create evaluation techniques and metrics of system performance, functional safety per ISO26262 and safety of the intended function (SOTIF) per ISO21448
  • Design and build specifications (SysML), models (physics) and advanced simulations (multiple frameworks) of actuators, controls and sensors
  • Create scenarios of interest and environment to develop/verify advanced automation system technologies
  • Design simulation environments in CARLA, SUMO, FORETELLIX, nVIDIA Constellation-Drive, Mathworks, etc.) in which to conduct experiments to validate advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and subsystems for functionality, attribute performance and safety across the Operational Design Domain
  • Develop refinements to process, method and engineering tool standards
  • Develop actions to improve reuse through translation and traceability of engineering artifacts across multiple subject areas and toolsets through scripting and through development and application of standardized data ontologies, including review and adoption of industry standards where available
  • Collaborate with product engineers to improve how we virtually validate solutions against real-world application benchmarks for quality and robustness
  • Develop and integrate to support MIL/SIL/HIL environments
  • The minimum requirements we seek
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Natural Sciences
  • Two or more years of experience crafting scenario simulation of automated system / robotics (e.g. Behavior, Performance, etc.) or crafting sensing (e.g. Localization, Fusion, etc.) simulations within real-world operating environments (e.g. Photo Realistic or Dynamic Weather, etc.) (co-op/internship/coursework allowed)
  • Two pluse years of experience with Python, C++, Apollo and/or Robotic Operating System (ROS) (co-op/internship/coursework allowed)
  • At least one year of experience developing Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI) algorithms for sensing or path applications, object classification and/or automated systems (co-op/internship/coursework allowed)
  • Our preferred requirements
  • Experience in developing physically and empirically based models/simulations to verify that proposed concepts and strategies meet the requirements
  • Expertise with generating test scenarios, perception (e.g. computer vision), time series data (e.g. multivariate forecasting, correlation analysis, etc.) and decision making (e.g. using Reinforcement Learning)
  • Experience modeling city, road segments and highway environments/vehicle scenarios
  • Strong background in mathematics, statistics and probability theory as it pertains to the broad field of decisions under uncertainty, especially the area of Reinforcement Learning and its variants (deep-RL, IRL, etc.) as well as in fundamental aspects of MDP, SDP, DP, Game theory, Bayesian methods, Monte Carlo schemes etc.
  • Experience analyzing data sets (e.g. data gathering, data set quality, data correlation)
  • Experience in data science, ontology development and data standardization
  • Background in cloud computing as well as with Linux/Ubuntu based systems
  • Experience in big data analytics and data server/data pipeline/data lake
  • Knowledge of embedded algorithms, integration, verification, validation and software development lifecycle
  • Experience with analysis for Functional Safety (e.g. HARA, SG, FSRs, TSRs) or Safety of Intended Function (SOTIF), especially design confirmation and quality metrics related to development of machine learning applications
  • Experience working in a team-based project from inception to finish across multiple subject areas (e.g., systems engineering, mathematical modeling, algorithm development, application implementation, etc.)
